Understanding the capabilities and limitations of the tummy tuck procedures you’re considering is crucial in choosing the surgery that will best meet your expectations. The extended tummy tuck and fleur-de-lis tummy tuck are primarily focused on the front and sides of the abdomen; however, if you are also concerned about back fat, there are techniques that address unwanted fat in this area.
Here, Detroit cosmetic surgeon, Dr. George T. Goffas shares what you can expect from these tummy tuck techniques and additional or alternative procedures to contour your back.
Fleur-de-lis and extended tummy tuck techniques
The fleur-de-lis and extended tummy tuck procedures are advanced variations of the standard tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to address cosmetic and functional concerns, such as abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti).
The fleur-de-lis tummy tuck focuses on the central abdomen, using a standard tummy tuck incision and an additional vertical incision from the lower part of the sternum to the pubic area, creating an upside-down “T” or fleur-de-lis pattern. This technique allows for significant skin removal in both vertical and horizontal dimensions of the abdomen and addresses both the upper and lower abdomen more comprehensively than a standard tummy tuck
An extended tummy tuck uses a longer incision than a standard tummy tuck, extending beyond the hip bones and often toward the lower back, to remove a larger amount of excess skin and fat. It’s particularly effective for individuals with excess skin and fat deposits that pool around the hips.
Procedures to reduce back fat
Because these tummy tuck techniques do not directly address back fat, you and your surgeon may discuss adding other procedures to your tummy tuck surgery plan or perhaps determine a different body contouring procedure to address back fat specifically, such as:
- Liposuction: Liposuction safely and effectively removes fat from targeted areas, including the back, flanks (love handles), or bra-line area. For the right candidate, adding liposuction to the back as part of the tummy tuck procedure plan can achieve a smoother, firmer midsection and back.
- 360 tummy tuck: This technique, also called a circumferential tummy tuck, extends the traditional tummy tuck incision all the way around the waistline to remove excess skin and fat from the sides and back.
- Back lift: A back lift specifically targets excess skin and fat in the back region to achieve a more defined and toned back appearance.
