It’s finally here: the warm and sunny weather we’ve all been waiting for! Summer is the perfect opportunity to gather your family and friends together outside, because at this time of year everything is better al fresco.
Southeast Michigan is full of outdoor concerts, festivals, performances and other live entertainment to enjoy. This summer promises the busiest calendar of events in years, so we’ve compiled a list of our favorites in Macomb County and the greater Detroit area.
For Movie Buffs
There is something sweet and nostalgic about a drive-in movie theater. We’re fortunate to have many opportunities for viewing cinema outdoors, so you can fill the calendar with summer movies. Get your tickets (advanced purchase is required online for all screenings), gather a car-load of your crew, grab your popcorn or other concessions, and kick back in a comfortable and pandemic-friendly setting. At the Macomb County Drive-in at Freedom Hill County Park, movies are shown multiple times daily on the LED big screen. Look out for double features, and special theme nights! You can also check out the Summer Drive-in Series at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth. Each week in summer they pick three different classic movies to project onto the arena’s large monitors.
For Theater Nerds
We love live theater. Schedule a visit to Shakespeare Royal Oak from July 28-August 7 to view a timely modern remake of Romeo and Juliet. The star-crossed lovers are survivors of climate crisis and war in fair Verona and together “defy the stars; daring to love – and creating beauty in a world where none was promised.” This unique production is hosted in Michigan’s largest annual outdoor professional theater. Now in its 22nd year, the Water Works Theater Company collaborates with the region’s best professional and emerging professional artists, as well as offering youth education programs that bring the Bard’s amazing work to life in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting.
For Music Fans
Outdoor concerts are what summer is all about. And we’re fortunate to live in an area where you can see live music nearly every night of the week! Check out one of these summer concert series, grab a blanket or chair and head out for an evening of fun and memories. The best part? They’re all FREE!
